ROLWALING VALLEY TREK 26 DAYS

Beding Village in Rolwaling Valley
Rolwaling Valley the NON-Turistic trekking route, for those trekkers like no crowded trails in the Everest region, also is a quiet mountain and steep-walled valley as its name suggest. It is rugged yet beautiful area rarely visited unlike its neighboring Himalayas of Khumbu and offers lots of mountaineering challenges to the adventurer. This Rolwaling Valley Trek involves crossing of several high pass Trashi Labtsa (5,755m) and the climbing of Parcharmo (6,273m) and it is a must to equip oneself with mountaineering gear (to be brought by the trekkers).
This region lies between Langtang and Everest range. The side of both Langtang and Everest are the highlights of this trek. The trekkers will be rewarded with the enchanting view of Majestic Mountain Gauri Shanker. The route is near by the Tibet border side so that one can understand a little about Tibetan culture too.
This area is mostly used by Buddhist people however, we can also see the Brahmin, Chettri, Tamang and Sherpa villages and theirs life style. The trek to this region starts from Barabise, a small township upper Charikot, an 5 hours drive from Kathmandu. The trail adds more thrills to the trek. The option of crossing Tashi Laptsa pass (5755m.) to go to Namche Bazar of Everest region is an adventure of its own kind. In this trail the Glacial Lake Tsho Rolpa offers the experience of lifetime

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
3 Day. Katmandú - Barabise (820m): The route taken to reach our expedition commencement point is by way of the Arniko Highway, the main vehicular thoroughfare between Nepal and Tibet. Our bus trip winds out through the busy traffic of the Kathmandu valley in fertile foothills of rice terrace and vegetation towards the Sun Kosi (River). The journey should take approx. five hours with a lunch stop at Lamosangu. Barabise is a busy transit town situated at the confluence of the Sun Kosi and Bhote Kosi (The first of three Bhote Kosis we pass on this trek). Our camp is in a pleasant setting ten minutes walk from the town among tall mango trees
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
4 Day. Barabise - Karthali (1700m): The trail leads out from behind the town, ascending many stairs up a terraced ridge of Chetri and Tamang villages. There are many local people carrying goods to and from the town and children on their way to school. The conditions are warm and humid, and the 'Chautaras' or resting places of fig and Banyan trees provide the best approach, with small steps to enable you to find your trekking legs' and become 'acclimatised' to the conditions.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
5 Day: Karthali - Dolongsa (3000m): Our immediate goal is in sight; the crossing of the high ridge known as Kalinchok Danda at its lowest point; the Tinsang La (3320m.). It is still more than a day's walk away but may clearly be seen through binoculars; two small chortens marking the gap. There are several ridges of farmed hillsides to traverse around before reaching forests of rhododendron and oak. We have left the Hindu villages of the lower hills behind and trek up through fields of wheat, millet, and the whitewashed stone houses that belong to the Tamang people of Buddhist faith. From Dolongsa, we trek steeply up though rhododendrons to scenic pastures just beneath the pass.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
6 Day: Dolangsa - Chagan (1600m): It is a solid day of climbing and descending if we choose to make the interesting side trip to Bigu Gompa (2500m) situated on another ridge across the valley of Amatal Khola. A short ascent to the pass provides us with our first glimpses of the Himalaya including Gauri Shankar and Numbur to the east. To the west, we can see several Tibetan peaks including Chaduk Bir and Ama Bamare. Beautiful forests of spruce, oak, maple and rhododendron surround us, some more than one hundred years old and towering as many feet high. We descend by shepherd's trails to the floor of the valley and make a short climb across to the gompa. Bigu is the largest and most significant of three nunneries in Nepal, it has well kept buildings and gardens and is ornately decorated inside. From there, it is a long descent of many staircases to the Sangawa Khola and a pleasant riverside camp a little further on at Chagan.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
7 Day: Chagan - Laduk (2200m): A steady day of walking as we traverse and ascend the many ridges towards the valley of Bhote Kosi numbers two! The conditions warm up as we walk mostly through open terraces of millet, wheat and barley belonging to the local Tamang people. Laduk has a large school ground at the top of the village that makes a suitable camp and enjoyable location to watch the sunset
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
8 Day . Laduk - Jagart (1600m): After a short traverse around the ridge, we enter the valley of the Bhote Kosi and enjoy spectacular views of Gauri Shankar and Melungtse to the northeast. The rural countryside is picturesque before the mountains and we take our time to enjoy the views and converse with schoolchildren who are eager to practice their English. The trail descends steeply to the river. As we approach, the river may be clearly seen; its turquoise waters against the yellows and greens of the adjacent fields and forest make it appealing for a swim. The greater Himalaya including Gauri Shankar is however, glacially feeding it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
9 Day: Jagart - Simigoan (2020m): Now at riverside, we are among temperate forests that are home to ferns, mosses and small orchids, as well as rhesus and langur monkeys that are often seen jumping across the trees. Crossing the river just downstream from the confluence of the Rolwaling Khola, we make a steep two hours ascent to the village of Simigoan, The village is rich with terraces of wheat, barley and millet; and people busily tending fields and livestock to make a living for themselves. It is a pleasant camp on a sharp ridge at the top of the village offering superb sunset and sunrise views of Gauri Shankar.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
10 Day: Simegoan - Dongar Khola (2800m): A fairly solid day of walking up the Rolwaling Valley among forests of birch, rhododendron and conifers. We enjoy our first glimpses of the rapid glacial blue waters that we follow to the source, and the house-sized boulders that are scattered in its path. Camp is beside Rolwaling Khola, providing another opportunity for a refreshing wash or to watch the many small water birds darting in and about the river.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
11 Day: Dongar Khola - Beding (3695m): Continuing on up through forest, we cross a swing bridge and trek high on the valley side before vast cliff faces that make up the northern valley wall. A wide gorge opens to our left and offers impressive views of the south face of Gauri Shankar for the first time. It is here that our Buddhist crew may build a cairn for good luck while we are in the mountains. As we approach the busy Sherpa village of Beding there are yak pastures at riverside and views of the fluted face of Chekigo at the head of the valley. The sturdy stone housing reflects the harsh winters the local people must endure.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
12 Day: Beding - Rest Day: A rest day will be spent in this lovely village by the Bhote Kosi river. This will be a good day to rest, do laundry and acclimatize prior to our ascent toward Teshi Laptsa.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
13 Day: Beding - Na-Goan (4183m): Most residents of Rolwaling are Sherpa yak herders who are only able to grow potatoes and turnips. We have some appreciation of their hardy existence as we ascend the valley to the summer grazing settlement of Na. Trekking at an easy pace to ensure good acclimatisation; we make our way along an easy trail beside the river. The vegetation is mostly small shrubs, grasses and some juniper and birch. Our alpine views span out as we approach camp and we are fortunate to have them with us for the next three or four days before a change of scenery. Chobuje, Kang Nachugo, Chekigo, Bamongo, Dorje Phagmo to name a few.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
14 Day: Na-Goan Aclimatizing Day: Time to make a half day side trip up the valley side to better acclimatise and obtain views of our route ahead. Na is the last substantial settlement before we reach Khumbu over the pass so we spend time in a relaxed environment familiarising ourselves with the climbing equipment and organising ourselves for the challenges ahead.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
15 Day: Na-Goan - Tso Rolpa lake (4500m): Depending on snow conditions, the walking to our lake camp should be relatively easy and a half day' walk. The path is fairly level, curving to the east and leading towards the Trakarding Glacier. Two fine mountains feed the glacier at the head of the valley and may clearly be seen as we approach camp; Bigphera Go Shar (east) and Bigphera Go Nup (west). A ten minute walk from camp up the lateral moraine provides a spectacular view of Tsho Rolpa; one of the largest glacial lake in Nepal. Looking back we have a superb view of Kang Nachugo and a glimpse of Melungtse in Tibet.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
16 Day: TsoRolpa lake - Boulder camp: A full and challenging day as we ascend and cross the moraine toward the pass. The weather may be quite changeable and the rocks on the moraine are often loose necessitating concentration and keeping a steady pace as a group. Camp is usually made near the vase o f the Drolambau Glacier with stunning views to the south and east in particular. Note - Our itinerary is totally flexible while crossing the pass, and it may be influenced by many factors such as weather, glacier and snow conditions, and the progress of the group and crew/porters. Your leader will have complete control of setting the schedule in order to maintain safety for all members of the expedition and to achieve the trip objectives in the smoothest and most efficient way possible. The following days are to be taken as a guide only.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
17 Day: Boulder Lake - Trakarding Glacier (5000m): Short but challenging, the day is spent negotiating a route up through rubble and rock buttresses to a ledge, being a strategic position for the pass crossing. Some fixed ropes are usually required to ensure our route over the rock slabs is completely safe.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
18 Day: Trakarding Glacier - Ngole (5000m)- Teshi Lapcha (5750m): Again the weather, snow and glacier conditions will play a large part in how difficult the route will be. Leaving the Trakarding Glacier behind, we climb up steadily through several rocks and ice gullies to reach the snout of the Drolambau Glacier where we are treated with a superb new vista of mountains. They extend the full length of the Drolambau, of which many are unnamed and have never been climbed. It is one of the least accessible parts of the NEPAL Himalaya. Tengi Ragi Tau and Parchamo tower to our right and mark the gap to the pass; both are particularly elegant and individual in character. We then need to make a long, steady trek along the rock/snow glacier and up the slopes to the pass. There are several sections, which require some scrambling on rock and ice that are more difficult before we make a relatively easy approach to the pass (not counting the altitude!). Our staff will work closely with team members to make a safe passage for all. The views as we approach are unmatched. The pass achieved, we enjoy the thrill of where we are, sandwiched between two fabulous mountain ranges. It is also the last views we will have to the west before descending to Khumbu. Care must be taken as we make a route sown firstly through snow and then rock and scary to the moraine and our camp. Fixed ropes will be required as we descend through several rock and ice gullies that are constantly changing
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

19 Day: Teshi Lapcha - Parchamo (rest Day or Climb Parchamo): After the breakfast do many personal activities and leiseure day ab base of Pacharmo Mountain, another option is to climb just to High Camp of Parchamo, or Summit Parchamo with support guide, and came back to the Base Camp of Pechermo dinner and overnight

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
20 Day: Parchamo Base - Thami (3800m): Rejoining the rest of the group, we descend the glacier and moraine to grassy meadows where yaks are often grazing and our first signs of civilization for some days. Before us, the mountains of Thamserku, Kang Taiga and Ama Dablam form a spectacular horizon before us (eastward), whilst Teng Kangpoche and Kwangde RI rise directly beside us to the south. It is only a short walk on to Thame, a large Sherpa village at the junction of the Bhote Kosi.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
21 Day: Thami - Rest Day: An opportunity to relax and perhaps do some washing. The monastery here is the oldest in Nepal and most significant in the Khumbu region. It is well worth the short walk to view the gompa
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
22 Day: Thami - To Namche Bazaar (3440m): We descend to the river from Thame and cross a steel bridge over the spectacular marrow gorge of the Bhote Kosi, a climb is then before us, up and around beneath Kumbila, through hillsides of juniper and fir trees to Namche Bazaar. The trail is good, making for easier walking, however watch for the yak trains that block the way. (They don't move for trekkers!). The sounds of helicopters and small aircraft are frequent as we go down to Namche Bazaar. Finally we get to a beautiful Sherpa village on the corner of hill. Comparatively the Namche Bazaar is a big Sherpa village where we can find most of the modern facilities and things to buy in the market
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
23 Day: Namche Bazaar - Phakding (2650m.): Another day we descend down to Dudh Kosi (Milky River) then crossing a suspension bridge over the Dudh Kosi the trail goes on the bottom of Thamserku via Jorsale and Manju along the river
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
24 Day: Phakding - Lukla (2850m): Our last day of trekking is only a short walk along the valley before we make the final climb up to the airstrip at Lukla. We will take lunch at our lodge and the afternoon is free for you to wander around, relax or perhaps have a hot shower
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
25 Day: Lukla – Khatmandu: We rise early in the morning to be ready for the arrival of the aircraft, for the flight back to Kathmandu. We will be met at the airport and transferred to our Hotel
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
26 Day: Kathmandu - Europe / America: after the Breakfast in the Hotel in Khatmandu, our Sherpa tour leader will transfer the passengers to the International Airport at proper time to fligh back home. END OF OUR SERVICES
